Ten years. That is how long fans have waited for Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde to crack their next case. On November 26, 2026, Walt Disney Animation Studios finally delivers: Zootopia 2 arrives in theaters as Disney’s Thanksgiving tentpole. If the first film taught us anything, it is that this bunny-and-fox duo does not miss.
The case that rattles Zootopia
Detectives Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the animal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, the partners go undercover in unexpected new corners of town, and the strain tests their partnership like never before.
The reptile is Gary De’Snake, a pit viper voiced by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan. The trailers make a meal of the culture shock: no snake has set foot in Zootopia in living memory, and Gary’s arrival at a formal event sends the mammal establishment into a panic. It is the classic Zootopia move, a buddy-cop plot wrapped around a genuinely thoughtful story about who gets to belong.
The whole brain trust is back
Disney is not messing with the formula. Jared Bush, co-director and co-writer of the original and director of Encanto, co-directs with Byron Howard, the original’s director and another Encanto veteran. Bush also wrote the script. Yvett Merino, who produced Encanto, produces. The score comes from Michael Giacchino, an Oscar winner whose music has elevated everything from Up to The Batman.
That continuity matters. The original Zootopia was not just a hit; it was a billion-dollar, Academy Award-winning phenomenon. Sequels to films that beloved live or die on whether the filmmakers understand what made the first one special. Bringing back the entire creative brain trust is the strongest possible signal.
A parade of a cast
Goodwin and Bateman return, and their chemistry was always the engine of this franchise, the earnest rookie and the reformed con artist, now pushed apart by a case that tests them. Shakira is back as Gazelle, Zootopia’s biggest pop star, and this time she is bringing an original song: “Zoo,” written by Shakira with Ed Sheeran and Blake Slatkin. The single dropped October 10, 2026, and it is already doing numbers.
Sheeran and Slatkin also cameo as a pair of sheep named, wait for it, Ed Shearin and Baalake Lambkin. That is the kind of pun the original specialized in, and it is a good sign the sequel’s sense of humor survived the decade.
The newcomers read like a festival lineup: Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Josh Gad, Stephanie Beatriz, Wilmer Valderrama, John Leguizamo, Anika Noni Rose, Rachel House, and David Fane, plus Fortune Feimster and Quinta Brunson in roles still under wraps.
Circle the date
Disney knows exactly what it is doing with the Thanksgiving slot. The studio has owned this corridor for decades; it is where families go, all together, and a Zootopia sequel is about as close to a sure thing as Hollywood makes. The original’s legacy has only grown: a Shanghai Disneyland land, a new stage show coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom this winter, and a generation of kids who learned the words “try everything.” Thanksgiving is shaping up to be a feast for family entertainment, from Universal Studios Hollywood’s first-class holiday makeover to this. But Thanksgiving belongs to the bunny and the fox.
November 26. Mark it. Zootopia has never looked better.
